The conference will present the outputs of the Learning by Doing – Developing Key Competences in Pre-school Education (ABC for Kindergartens) project, co-funded by Erasmus+, which aims to improve the quality of pre-school education through project-based and activity-based learning.

9:30-9:45 Presentation of the project Learning by Doing – development of key competences in pre-school education (ABC for kindergartens) (PhDr. Barbora Loudová Stralczynská, Ph.D., PhDr. Eva Koželuhová, Ph.D.)
Annotation:
In the opening introduction, the ABC project for kindergartens, co-funded by the European Erasmus+ project, will be presented, involving 7 partner organisations coordinated by Raabe Publishing. The project runs from 2020 to January 2023 and brings together the efforts of 8 organisations from three European countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia). The aim of this project is to improve the quality of pre-school education by introducing innovative approaches and practices, to ensure the comprehensive development of pre-school children’s competences. This will be achieved by supporting kindergarten teachers in gaining knowledge on how to effectively apply project-based learning and activity-based learning in preschool education. Two unique outputs of the project will be presented – ABC Methodology for Teachers and ABC course for teacher training.

Annotation:
The input will highlight the characteristics of contemporary pre-school education. The changing role of the teacher, child and family in the educational process will be described. Attention will be given to the characteristics of the preschool child’s learning and the conditions that are desirable to set in preschools for his optimal personality development. Examples from practice in project schools will be used to show how strategies that promote this development can be put into practice.

Annotation of three workshops on project-based learning:
The co-authors of the essential ABC project outcomes for kindergartens will present theoretically, but also with examples of good practice, an innovative method of project-based learning (PBL = Project-Based Learning) suitable for motivating and activating children in preschool education.
The method is innovative because it aims to encourage teachers to move from the role of “leaders” to “guides” of the learning process. Through practical examples in the project kindergartens, the teachers will demonstrate a concrete way of educational practice in which children work independently on a complex task in which they solve a practical problem linked to real life. This includes promoting child-centred approaches and developing children’s needs such as creativity, independence, motivation to learn, awareness of their own rights and responsibilities, problem solving and self-evaluation. The workshop will equip educators with knowledge to support their professional development.

Annotation of three workshops on activity-based learning:
The co-authors of the essential ABC project outputs for kindergartens will present an innovative method of activity-based learning (TBL = Task-Based Learning) suitable for motivating and activating children in preschool education.
The method is innovative because it aims to encourage the teacher to move from the role of “leader” to “facilitator” of the learning process. The workshop will introduce the theoretical ideas of task-based learning in early childhood education, the benefits and challenges of TBL, the role of TBL education and the practical possibilities of using TBL in different areas of early childhood education (mathematics, language, science, drama, dance and music, art, physical education and technology education). Using examples from project-based kindergartens, educators will demonstrate concrete ways of activity-based learning for children. The workshop will equip teachers with knowledge that will support their professional development.
